Birthday Cake Crunch Cake Pops
Leftover grocery store birthday cake gets mashed with pulverized berry crunch cereal, rolled into balls, and dunked in melted candy coating. A crunchy cereal sprinkle on top tells you exactly what's inside.
Ingredients
- 1/2grocery store birthday cake · leftover cake works great
- 2 cupsberry crunch cereal, pulverized · plus extra crushed cereal for decorating; skip if making cake from scratch
- 10 ozchocolate or vanilla melting wafers · candy coating
- 2 1/2 tspvegetable shortening · per 10 oz bag of melting wafers, to thin the coating
- —cake pop sticks
Steps
- 1
Combine the half birthday cake with about 2 cups of pulverized cereal in a bowl, mixing until it reaches a Play-Doh consistency.
- 2
Refrigerate the mixture, ideally overnight.
- 3
Scoop the chilled cake mixture and form it into balls.
- 4
Return the cake balls to the fridge until cold.
- 5
Melt the candy wafers with the vegetable shortening (2 1/2 teaspoons per 10 ounce bag) until smooth and thinned.
- 6
Dip the tip of a cake pop stick into the melted coating, then plunge it into a cake ball. Set aside and chill the cake pops again.
- 7
Dunk each chilled cake pop into the coating, then twist so the excess falls off and flip it upright.
- 8
Sprinkle crushed cereal over the top while the coating is still wet, covering any bald spots.
- 9
Stand the pops upright in a cake pop stand — or a shoe box with holes poked in it — until set.
Creator's notes
You don't need a fancy cake pop stand — a shoe box with holes poked in it works fine. If you're transporting them, melt the wafers and shortening in a thermos filled with hot water; by the time you arrive everything is perfectly melted. Cold cake balls are essential before dipping.
