Homemade Cream of Onion Soup Mix
A pantry-friendly dry mix that reconstitutes into a thick, concentrated cream of onion soup with hot water and a whisk. Swap it one-for-one anywhere a can of cream of onion soup is called for, or stir the dry mix straight into a slow cooker.
Ingredients
- 2 cupspowdered milk
- 1 cupcornstarch
- 1/2 cuppowdered heavy cream
- 3/4 cupdehydrated minced onion
- 3 Tbspinstant chicken bouillon
- 1 Tbspblack pepper
- 3 Tbsponion powder
- 1 tsppoultry seasoning
- 3 Tbspbutter powder · optional
Steps
- 1
Mix all ingredients together and transfer to a container with an airtight lid.
- 2
To use, measure 3/4 cup of the dry mix into a saucepan.
- 3
Add 1 1/2 cups hot water and whisk. The water doesn't have to be boiling, but the soup comes together faster when it's already hot.
- 4
Heat the pan over medium heat, whisking continuously, until the mixture is smooth and thick.
- 5
Use as a 1-to-1 replacement for one can of condensed cream of onion soup.
Creator's notes
Reconstituted soup keeps in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about a week — scoop out however much you need. You can also add the dry mix and water straight to a slow cooker and it will reconstitute as the meal cooks. The finished texture should be thick and gloopy, just like the canned version, because it's a concentrate.
