Monster Subs for Dinner
Silly, grinning sub sandwiches piled with salami, ham and turkey, with jagged mozzarella teeth and olive eyeballs. A no-cook, kid-pleasing Halloween dinner you can put together before trick-or-treating.
Ingredients
- 4sesame seed sub buns · the seeds are warts
- —mayo · or whatever sauce you like
- 12 to 16 slicessalami
- 12 to 16 slicesdeli ham
- 12 to 16 slicesdeli turkey
- 4 to 8 slicesmozzarella cheese · floppy mozzarella works best
- 8pimento-stuffed green olives
- 8toothpicks
- —lettuce · optional
- —festive chips · for serving
Steps
- 1
Use a knife to cut a jagged zigzag pattern into the mozzarella slices so they look like monster teeth.
- 2
Spread mayo or your preferred sauce on the inside of each bun.
- 3
Add lettuce if using.
- 4
Layer the salami, ham and turkey, letting the meat hang over the front edge of the bun like lips or a tongue.
- 5
Tuck the cheese teeth in so the jagged edges hang out over the meat, using cheese on both the top and bottom.
- 6
Poke 2 toothpicks through the top of each bun where you want the eyes, then stick a stuffed green olive on each one.
- 7
Serve with festive chips, and remove the toothpicks before little ones eat.
Creator's notes
Floppy mozzarella cuts into the best teeth. Let the meat hang over the front edge so it looks like lips or a tongue, because grotesque is the goal. Pull out the toothpicks before little ones dig in.
