The Best Chocolate Mug Cake
A fudgy, tender single-serving chocolate cake mixed right in the mug and microwaved in about a minute and a half. It needs no egg and leaves almost nothing to clean up, so it works well as a late-night treat.
Ingredients
- 1/4 cupall-purpose flour · spooned into the cup and leveled
- 3 tablespoonsgranulated sugar
- 2 tablespoonscocoa powder
- 1/4 teaspoonbaking powder
- 1 pinchsalt · add a little more if serving with ice cream
- 1 teaspoonvanilla extract
- 1/4 cupwhole milk
- 2 tablespoonsvegetable oil
- 2 tablespoonssemi-sweet chocolate chips · optional; any chocolate chips work, plus a handful extra for the top if you like
Steps
- 1
Use a large microwave-safe mug that holds 10 to 12 ounces.
- 2
Add the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder and salt to the mug, then whisk until combined.
- 3
Add the vanilla, milk and vegetable oil. Stir until well combined, scraping the bottom of the mug so no lumps of flour are left.
- 4
Stir in the chocolate chips, if using.
- 5
Microwave on high for 60 seconds. If you like, sprinkle a handful of chocolate chips on top at this point.
- 6
Keep microwaving in 10-second increments until the center looks dry and the cake is puffed. This took just over 90 seconds in total in the video. Residual heat will finish cooking a slightly wet center.
- 7
Serve plain, or with whipped cream or ice cream.
Creator's notes
Leave out the egg on purpose, since a whole egg makes the cake chewy. For a Mexican hot chocolate version, add 1/4 tsp cinnamon and a pinch of cayenne. For a mocha cake, add 1/2 tsp espresso powder. You can also mix a spoonful of peanut butter, caramel, cream cheese, Nutella or Biscoff into the batter or put it on top. To save time later, premix the dry ingredients and store them in a bag or container.
