5 Tips to Elevate Boxed Brownies
Simple swaps turn any boxed brownie mix into a fudgy, deeply chocolatey bake with a shiny crackly top. Brown butter, whole milk, and a hit of instant coffee do most of the work.
Ingredients
- 1 boxbrownie mix · any brand
- —whole milk · equal parts, in place of the water called for on the box
- —unsalted butter · browned, in place of the vegetable oil called for on the box
- —vanilla extract
- —instant coffee powder · a little
- —salt · a pinch
- —chocolate chips · if included with the box mix
Steps
- 1
Brown the unsalted butter and let it cool slightly.
- 2
Prepare the boxed brownie mix as directed, replacing the water with an equal amount of whole milk and the vegetable oil with the browned butter.
- 3
Add a little vanilla extract, a small amount of instant coffee powder, and a pinch of salt to the batter.
- 4
Stir in any chocolate chips that came with the box mix.
- 5
Bake according to the package, but pull the brownies about 5 minutes early so the centers stay fudgy — check that they aren't raw, since every oven differs.
- 6
Cool, cut, and serve with a glass of milk.
Creator's notes
Every oven is different — underbaking by about 5 minutes is what works for her, but check that they aren't raw.
